How the UV stage works

• The UV stage, the final stage of the Five-Barrier, is a UV-C lamp that treats water as it flows through a quartz sleeve.
• UV-C treatment is a long-established technology used in municipal and residential water systems.
• UV treatment adds no chemicals to the water and doesn’t change its taste or odor.
• The UV stage works by exposing flowing water to ultraviolet light at about 254 nanometers.
• The upstream 1-micron and 0.5-micron filters reduce sediment and cloudiness, which helps UV light pass through the water.
• UV performance depends on water clarity, flow rate and lamp condition, which is why the system includes a flow limiter and pre-filters.
• Replace the UV lamp at the interval in the manual; lamps lose output over time even while they still glow.
• Keep the quartz sleeve clean; a coated sleeve blocks UV light.
• The UV stage is one barrier in a multi-stage system, not a stand-alone treatment.
• For untested or non-potable sources, follow your local health authority’s guidance on water treatment.
